Forms. Alongside the electrical permit application, the Building Department posts a Residential Electrical Load Calculations Worksheet, the kind of calculation behind any service upgrade or big new load (Building Department documents). The town's electrical fee schedule is posted as a scanned document (fee schedule); your electrician can tell you the fee for your job.
Historic districts. Billerica has four local historic districts: Billerica Center, the Corner, Billerica Mills and Richardson's Mill (Historic Resources Survey). No building permit can be granted for exterior work in one of them without a certificate from the Historic Districts Commission, for changes visible from a public way; interior work isn't reviewed (HDC brochure). Its guidelines cover exterior lights, so ask the Commission before changing what's visible outside.
Where the utilities meet. Billerica is on National Grid, but its neighbors aren't all: the state's utility table lists Wilmington on Reading Municipal Light and Burlington, Bedford and Carlisle on Eversource (state utility lookup). If you're comparing notes with friends in those towns, their utility process differs.
Licensing. We look up an electrician's Massachusetts license before referring them, and you can check any license yourself on the state license lookup.
Last verified November 2026. New England Electric Pros is a referral service. We don't pull permits or do electrical work; the electrician who does the job files the permit.
Billerica's homes
Raised ranches, capes and winterized summer cottages
The town's historic survey describes post-war Billerica as overwhelmingly single-family, with split-entry ranches, one-story ranches and capes as the common infill. Around Nutting Lake and the south end of Boston Road, land was sold off in the early 1900s for summer camps and modest cottages, and many were winterized into year-round houses from the Depression on (Historic Resources Survey). North Billerica had about 150 company-owned mill houses by 1920.
For the wiring, that means mid-century services sized before central air, heat pumps or EV charging, and former cottages wired piecemeal over decades, where service size and quality vary a lot from house to house.

Billerica Center
The civic core on high ground, with architecture from Georgian through Victorian; a local and National Register district.
North Billerica
A dense, well-preserved factory village on the Concord River, with mill housing and the Billerica Garden Suburb.
East Billerica
Mostly suburban with large single-family lots, plus Greek Revival homes around Richardson's Mill.
Pinehurst and Nutting Lake
Densely platted former summer communities; Pinehurst once had its own post office, library and fire station.
West Billerica
Historically farmsteads strung along the main roads, and still the least densely developed part of town.
FAQ
Billerica electrical questions
Can a homeowner pull an electrical permit in Billerica?
No. The town's FAQ says only a Massachusetts licensed electrician can obtain an electrical permit.
When does Billerica's inspector of wires inspect?
Inspections run 9 am to 3 pm and need 24 hours' notice. The inspector's office hours are 7:30 to 9 am weekdays, at 978-671-1307.
Do I need approval for exterior electrical work in a Billerica historic district?
In the four local historic districts, exterior work visible from a public way needs a certificate from the Historic Districts Commission before a building permit can be granted. Interior work isn't reviewed.
Why do older Billerica cottages need electrical work?
Many started as summer cottages and were winterized over the years, often with wiring added a piece at a time. Year-round heat, heat pumps or EV charging can be more than the original service was meant for.
What does it cost me to use New England Electric Pros?
Nothing. We don't charge homeowners for the request or the referral; the electrician prices the job.
