Dracut's homes

Mill villages, pond cottages and post-war houses

Dracut's population more than doubled between 1950 and 2010, and about three-quarters of its homes are single-family houses (housing production plan; 2024 open space plan, 74.6%). Older layers sit underneath: the state's historical survey records workers' double cottages at Collinsville from around 1910–1920, and summer cottages around Long and Peters Ponds and along the Merrimack at Kenwood (MHC survey).

Those mixes show up in the wiring: mid-century services that were never sized for heat pumps or EVs, two-family cottages with awkward shared arrangements, and former seasonal places that weren't built for year-round loads.
